Dr. Sowmya Krishna

CONSULTANT PSYCHIATRIST

Dr Sowmya Krishna, MBBS, MRCPsych, CCT (UK), is a Consultant Psychiatrist with more than 21 years of experience in managing common and complex mental disorders. She is currently an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist with the Centre for Autism, Neurodevelopmental disorders and Intellectual Disabilities (CANDDID) , Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, UK. She works with adolescents and working age adults. She has developed an interest and expertise in managing individuals with personality difficulties, bodily distress disorders (somatisation and medically unexplained disorder), neurodevelopmental disorders, common and complex mood disorders, anxiety and psychosis.

She completed her undergraduate training in India and then went to the UK to pursue higher training in psychiatry. She returned to India in 2017 and founded The Green Oak Initiative in 2019. She was a member of the managing committee at the Association for the Mentally Challenged (AMC), which is the oldest NGO in Karnataka. She was previously a consulting psychiatrist for Hank Nunn Institute.

She is well versed in various modalities of psychological therapies, Cognitive Analytical Therapy (CAT) and Mentalization Based Treatment(MBT), in particular. Her knowledge of psychopharmacology and psychological mindedness helps her work with her patients and families in a holistic and collaborative manner.

She is a firm believer of building resilience within communities and has successfully run outreach programmes and Employee Wellness Initiatives for organisations like Razorpay, Noora Health,Bridge Health and PM Square.

Another interest of hers has been improving access to mental health services especially in lower income countries. She took active part in the development of a computerized tool called GMHAT (Global Mental Health Assessment Tool) and is the Chief GMHAT Trainer for the Asia division. This tool has been translated in many languages and is used in clinical practice and research. It is being used by various agencies like the Home Office (UK), Border Security Force and Rajasthan Police and also by various primary care professionals like ASHA workers and Anganwadi workers.
