Mental Health Triage

The French word “trier” the origin of the word “triage”, was originally applied to a process of sorting, probably around 1792, by Baron Dominique Jean Larrey, Surgeon in Chief to Napoleon’s Imperial Guard. The original concepts of triage were primarily focused on mass casualty situations – sorting into immediate, urgent, and non-urgent.
With the development of organized medical systems in the western world, the early 1900s saw triage emerging in the emergency departments in the US, UK, and Europe. In the last two decades, various mental health services have adopted the triage system to attend to the needs of the population in a timely manner.

INITIATING THE TRIAGE SERVICE

The first step towards accessing the triage service would be sending a WhatsApp message to +91 9972665268. We will collect your sociodemographic details and contact information via WhatsApp message. Triage clinician will then contact you within one working day of receiving the basic information for a triage call.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A TRIAGE CALL

Our mental health triage is a telephone-based assessment and support service for individuals with a mental illness or their relatives/friends/carers. This is delivered by a mental health clinician to determine the type and urgency of the response required from our service. The triage process also identifies whether the person needs further assessment by the specialist mental health or other services. Triage provides accessible and timely responses to meet individual mental health needs.

As clinicians making the triage call, the information we ask you includes:
• who the call is about and some basic demographic details for that person (if not already shared).
• whether the person the call is about is aware that the triage service is being contacted on their behalf.
• a brief description of what is happening for the person (presenting problem, risk, concerns, or issues).
• previous history, diagnoses and medications if relevant/known.
• who else might be involved in the care of the person (for example family and/or carers, a GP, private psychiatrist, or private psychologist).

This information contributes to the initial assessment and helps to determine the urgency of the response and type of response required from mental health or other services.
The mental health triage call should not take more than 5-10 minutes.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER A TRIAGE CALL

All referrals to the team are discussed in our weekly multidisciplinary meeting every Monday.
For non-urgent requests, we will get back to you on Monday afternoon after our multidisciplinary meeting.
If the situation is deemed an emergency or very serious, we will recommend the nearest emergency department or psychiatric unit for mental health crises.
If your need is urgent, we try to accommodate you within the week. However, if your need is urgent and we do not have availability to accommodate your request OR if we do not have the necessary expertise to support you, we will communicate the same. In such instances, we will provide you with details of other local clinicians. We do not take responsibility for the quality of care provided by clinicians that are outside our organization.
