Green Oak’s Book Club, “The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese”
Hello everyone!
Our March book club pick is The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese a intergenerational novel set in Kerala, where land and life are shaped by water.
Beginning in 1900, the story follows a young girl who becomes Big Ammachi, the matriarch of the Parambil estate, as her family lives under the shadow of a mysterious condition, a drowning in every generation. Running alongside is the journey of a Scottish doctor in colonial India, with the two narratives slowly converging against the backdrop of history, medicine, and social change.
It’s a layered novel about inheritance, faith, science, and what flows through generations both wounds and wisdom.
